Analog to Digital Conversion

Analog converters are needed in this modern world as digital signals are more immune to interference and can improve communication. Every advanced technical device is now equipped with these converters to increase precision. PCM1808 is a single-ended, 24 bit Stereo analog to digital converter. Its advanced features are making it capable of efficient data conversion in various applications.

What are the features of PCM1808?

It can perform 24-bit delta and sigma stereo analog to digital conversion. 24-bit resolution is required in many applications specifically for converting the audio signals into digital signals. Two data formats and two modes are supported by this module. The flexibility of the module is enhanced due to the dual-mode feature. Performance parameters are also optimized. Signal to noise ratio (SNR) typically equals 99 dB. A 99 dB figure is a very high figure that ensures a low level of noise or interference. Thus making the system more reliable and robust in terms of converting the data accurately. The simple fact is the higher the SNR the lower will be the error rate. Another main factor that plays a major role in analog to digital converters is Dynamic range. The value of the dynamic range of PCM1808 is 99 dB. The high pass filtration feature of ADC PCM1808 can remove the harmonics of the input signals. Due to third-order intermodulation products, the non-linearity is introduced and a distorted input signal is generated.

How the pop noise is avoided in PCM1808?

As it is mentioned earlier, this chip is more immune to noise. The chip provides the functionality of the fade-in and fade-out on pin no 9. Fade-in and the fade-out feature can make the sound softer and the crackles in the audio signal can be minimized.

For designing any product or project the first step is to select a suitable device. Why select PCM1808?

Several analogs to digital converters are available in the market but, the PCM1808 can be selected due to its high performance and low cost. In audio signal communication, the distorted signal can degrade the performance but, if a receiver’s ADC is PCM1808 a higher SNR is achieved. If the user's requirement is a high dynamic range, low area, and higher energy efficiency then PCM1808 is the best choice. Another requirement that should be considered for device selection is the voltage. PCM1808 requires a 3.3 V digital voltage supply and a 5 V analog voltage supply.

PCM1808 is also compatible with most microcontrollers. In the case of mini-projects, PCM1808 can be connected to Arduino and raspberry pie for analog to digital conversion. For larger projects, it can be connected to Field gate programmable arrays (FPGAs) and also with digital signal processing. Some other applications of PCM1808 analog to digital converters are electric musical instruments, MD player, multitrack receiver, DVD recorder, AV Amplifier or Receiver, CD recorder, and Digital TV.

When searching for an analog to digital converter look no further than the PCM1808 a great all-round product for cost-sensitive manufacturing and for achieving the optimized performance parameters for your electronic component.
