TPS61222DCKR

A boost converter is a DC-DC power converter that can step up the input voltages without affecting the current from the input to the module’s output. The TPS6122x family modules provide the voltage supply to various products powered by a battery of any type. (NiCd, NiMH, Li-polymer, Li-ion, single-cell, two-cell, or three cells). TPS61222DCKR is a 6-pin DCK (SC-70) package with 2 mm x 2 mm small dimensions.

The boost converter TPS61222DCKR employs synchronous rectification and a hysteretic controller design to achieve optimum efficiency with the minimum quiescent current. The product TPS61222DCKR can be used effectively by following the mentioned points.

  • A current-mode controller controlling the module and the feedback network, coupled with the voltage error amplifier, monitors the output voltage VOUT. The voltage error amplifier compares the feedback voltage to the internal voltage reference and changes the needed offset of the inductor current correspondingly to regulate the output voltage. External resistor divider can be used in adjustable versions for controlling the output voltage. In the case of the fixed output voltage version, the resistor circuit is connected internally.
  • An enable pin is used to enable or shut down the device. If the status of the EN pin is high, the device becomes functional. In case of un-sufficient input voltage, an additional startup oscillator is required. After attaining the required output voltage, the module again switched back to hysteretic current mode.
  • To ensure that the gadget works, connect an appropriate inductor between pin VIN and pin L.
  • Inductor values of 4.7 H operate well over the whole input and output voltage range.
  • The main switch should be turned off if the inductor current approaches the internal switch current limit. In this case, the output voltage will start decreasing.
  • If the output voltage is lower than the input voltage back gate diode becomes reverse biased. This is an output overload condition.
  • Internal monitoring of the module is performed to protect the overvoltage condition.
  • Built-in temperature sensor protects the module from over-temperature conditions.
  • Under-voltage lockout prevents the converter malfunction by deactivating the module in case of lower input voltage.

Modes of the module TPS61222DCKR include Enable or disable and current modes are controlled by the pin EN, V in FB, and V out. In contrast, the internal setup can control the other modes, including over-temperature, overvoltage, output overload, and under-voltage. However, the fluctuations are dependent upon the input pin. The module TPS61222DCKR is suitable for applications that require 0.7 to5.5 volts operating voltage.

The module offers 95% efficiency. 5.5v is a quiescent current giving the advantage of three sorts of protections (Over-temperature, over-voltage, and under-voltage). The adjustable voltage of the module TPS61222DCKR is 1.8V to 6V. The only disadvantage of the module TPS61222DCKR is its low input voltage and is suitable for only low voltage applications.

TPS61094 is another module manufactured by Texas Instruments that offers bidirectional buck and boost converter modes. But the module is not protected for overvoltage, under-voltage, and overtemperature. TPS61222DCKR is best in terms of protection from severe conditions.

Few applications of the module TPS61222DCKR are Smartphones, Personal Care Products, Solar or Fuel Cell Powered Applications, Battery-Powered Applications, and White or Status LEDs.
