Lm2596s

The lm2596s series of regulators are monolithic integrated circuits that provide all active functions for a  step-down (buck) switching regulator. A switching regulator rapidly switches a series device on and off. Switching regulators are efficient because the series element is either fully conducting or switched off. After all, it dissipates almost no power. Switching regulators can generate higher output voltage than the input voltage or opposite polarity, unlike linear regulators. It comes in two different packages 1) 5-pin TO-220 package 2) 5-pin TO-263. The TO-220 package comes with several lead bend options and has a body size of 14.986 mm × 10.16 mm, whereas the TO-263 package is a surface mount having dimensions of 10.10 mm × 8.89 mm. Different manufacturers provide a standard series of inductors for the lm2596s series. The optimized inductors for the lm2596s series greatly simplify the switch mode power supply.

The lm2596s series offers adjustable output versions. It comes in three variants with an output voltage of 3.3V, 5V, and 12V, respectively. The output load current of the lm2596s series is 3-A. The lm2596s series offers an input voltage range of up to 40V and requires only four external components as compared to other switching regulators. The lm2596s series offers excellent line and load specifications for end-user satisfaction. In the case of low electric current, the lm2596s series offers a low power standby mode. The lm2596s series provides users with an opportunity to create a custom design using a WEBBENCH power designer.

The lm2596s series of regulators are easy to use because they require a minimum number of external components. These regulators include a built-in fixed-frequency oscillator and internal frequency compensation. The lm2596s series allows for smaller-sized filter components because it operates at a frequency of 150 Hz. The delayed startup feature of the lm2596s series is useful in situations where the input power source is limited to the amount of current it can deliver. Because Buck regulators require low input current at higher input voltages, it allows the input voltage to rise to a higher voltage before it starts operating. The lm2596s series consider the application that requires the regulator to remain off until the input voltage reaches a predetermined voltage. The lm2596s series offers two modes of operation continuous and discontinuous. The discontinuous process is selected for low current or high voltage applications. The lm2596s series can also operate as either an adjustable output series buck regulator or fixed output series buck regulator depending on the design considerations.

The lm2596s series are used in a variety of applications such as Appliances ( ovens, refrigerators, washers, coffee machines, Air conditioners, lawnmowers, etc.), Grid Infrastructure ( electricity meters, Power supply modules, microinverters, circuit breakers, etc.), Home theatre ( AV receiver, smart display, wired/wireless speakers, DVD recorder and player, etc.) and Retail automation and payment applications. ( ATMs, Barcode scanners, Electronic shelf labels, etc.)
